As a year end art project, students learned basic sewing techniques, including how to start and end a stitch, and making a running or whip stitch. They then sketched their ideas before cutting out fabric, making both the body and details for a cute character of their choice. The finished products were so adorable and well done! Not bad for many of the students' first times sewing!

The Grade 4s completed their own graffiti tags after watching videos about the controversial art style, and observing how the letters are made and coloured. As a result, students painted their names with bold designs and bright flashy colours for a stylistic effect.
In another lesson on digital art, the Grade 4s learned how to make animated gifs. They first practiced by making a simple crying face emoji. They were then tasked with making a more layered gif, inspired by video games. A variety of animations were developed, including shooting arrows, explosions, and creepy monsters. To see the gifs, please take a look at the virtual 4KE 2020-2021 Art Showcase: www.artsteps.com/embed/60501127f061ab3367ddf349/560/315 As one of our art projects, students practiced working with paints and colour value. They then used their skills to paint a city landscape, with saturated colours in the foreground and less saturated colours in the background. The results showed an interesting variety of landscapes!
To get in the seasonal mood, the Grade 4s worked on making Snow Globes. Not only did they draw winter themed subjects, they learned how to paint gradients with watercolours, and further to combine that with the resist technique. As a result, we had a lot of striking drawings with a pretty wash of colour in the background! In October, 4KE worked on making sculptures out of cardboard. We also tied in one of the biggest days of the month as our theme, Halloween. Students made a variety of cutouts from monsters to simple jack-o-lanterns. They then put the sculptures together using slots cut in connective pieces. We had some creepy crawly art come out of this project!
During online learning, the Grade 4s learned how to create realistic portraits. This involved using guidelines, learning the shapes of different features, and looking at a mirror. Students were also introduced to Andy Warhol and his famous set of portraits. The Grade 4s then used unconventional colours and shadows to make their portraits stand out even more! The result was a colourful variety of unique and interesting artwork!
Just before Halloween, students made slot sculptures of ghosts, ghouls, and more. The Grade 4s drew cute and spooky creatures on cardboard, before colouring and cutting them out. They then put them together, using slots cut into the cardboard. They turned out great, making a 3D sculpture out of 2D pieces!
As our last project of the year, students learned how to sew, including starting a stitch, making a straight stitch, and ending it. They then sketched and used patterns to make designs of cartoon monsters. We cut felt into shapes, used colourful threads and beads to bring the designs all together. Some students unfortunately could not finish but what was put together was great! All that's needed for some is a thread and needle to finish at home! Please check out the process above.
After making cartoon versions of animals, students explored making more realistic images. They did this by drawing the face of an animal with more attention to details such as the shapes of features and outlining fur. They also paid attention to distinguishing where dark and light colours would be as they worked on creating relief stamps, deciding which layers would be paint, and which layers would show the colour of the paint beneath it. The stamps turned out great, even if it was a bit difficult carving them.
