Students spent many lunch hours and music classes preparing for this performance! A big thank you to our music teacher Mr. Erdogan for giving and helping the Grade 4s make such an awesome performance! Right after dissecting celery stalks, the Grade 4s went onto dissecting flowers! In class, we took apart some lilies to learn about the different parts of a flower and how it acts as the "reproductive organ" of many plants. The most interesting part for students was probably looking at the stigma, the very sticky center of the flower.
Just before the winter break hit, the Grade 4's managed to finish a winter themed art project. We made snow globes using pastels, watercolour, and a bit of salt. Students learned how to use a resist technique, making snowflakes by painting over pastel. The final results turned out quite dreamy and cute!
Recently, the grade 4 students presented their Google Slides Presentations on the Natural Regions of Alberta. Students researched on the internet what makes each of the natural regions in Alberta unique. They put that research into text and images on Google slides and presented it with their groups. The class learned about the variety of plants, wildlife, landforms, and weather that is found in Alberta.
At the end of November, Grade 4 moved into our new science unit, Plant Growth and Changes. Students will be learning about the different parts of different plants, how they function, and the important uses of plants in our world. To explore what stems are and what they do, we looked at celery first. We dipped the celery into coloured water and asked the question: What will happen to celery if it is put into red water? In only one day, students saw that the celery's leaves and even skin were starting to turn red! We recorded our observations in drawings and words, and then cut the celery up. Students were able to see that there are tubes inside the celery that carry the water throughout its body. It was a messy activity and our hands came out smelling a bit like celery, but it was definitely an interesting sight to see!
In Art, we made a scenic painting of Aspen Trees. Inspired by artist Melissa McKinnon, students learned about making depth in their works by including a background, middle ground, and foreground. Students made the background using watercolours, trees in the foreground and middle ground with masking tape and black paint, and sky and leaf details using paint and q-tips. There were many steps involved but students persisted and made beautiful pieces!
