Students examined maps and worked on sorting activities to understand how the names of communities in Alberta connected back to the cultures and history of people that lived there. We learned that many of the cities and towns are named by the First Nations, French, and British, but that there are locations even named by other cultures. Furthermore, we looked at maps to see the patterns of how these people traveled and where they chose to settle. It was an eye-opening experience to make these connections, even finding similar examples in Hong Kong itself!

As part of our learning about Plant Growth and Changes, students went on a field trip to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. There, we could look at a variety of plants and examine things such as leaf or stem types, and different kinds of seeds. As an added bonus, students viewed the animals and birds there, as well as played at a fun little playground. It was a great day all around! 4KE looked at and researched famous Albertans. Partners worked to put together a poster on an Albertan of their choice. They learned about how some fought for women's rights, how others represented First Nations cultures, and how some worked in scientific fields. Groups then presented to the classroom, helping their peers come to a greater understanding of how different people contributed to the identity of Alberta today.
Grade 4s worked on their compare and contrast skills, looking at the similarities and differences between 2 topics. Students picked their own topics, writing a report and making a Google Slides presentation. We learned about many things including different military tanks, the differences and similarities between Taekwondo and Kung Fu, and why certain animals that seems similar are actually different.
As an introduction to the Plant Growth and Changes unit, students designed their own plants - making "genetically modified organisms". Through this process, they were introduced to the different parts of a plant and their functions. Students were also challenged to think about how they could adapt their plant to specific environments such as the Arctic tundra or a hot desert. As a result, 4KE saw a wide variety of plants in the classroom!
Recently, Grade 4s completed a project creating cartoon animals on Google Drawing. They learned about how to make and combine shapes on the program, along with the process of how to simplify a realistic thing or object to make a cartoon. The final creations turned out wonderfully cute and colourful! |
