Another one of the simple machines we learned about in Science was gears. Students explored them in various ways, making physical gears and then seeing how they function on online interactives. We even looked at the gears in stopwatches! Please take a look at 4KE exploring gears below.

For the winter concert, the Grade 4 classroom performed The Biggest Best Snowman. Everyone got involved and practiced tirelessly. The performance turned out great and I was so proud of 4KE. Please take a look at some of the photos from rehearsals and the actual performance. Also, if you were unable to attend, there is a video of the full concert linked below! Before the beginning of winter break, students finished off their review math unit on Multiplication and Division Facts. We practiced different multiplication strategies such as skip counting and left to right. We also reviewed how to use multiplication charts and practiced solving many calculations. Please take a look at some of the activities!
Last month, 4KE went to the Hong Kong Science Museum to further explore Simple Machines. There we saw a collection of clocks and more importantly gear systems. We were also able to see examples of pulleys. We otherwise explored the museum and even looked at the mirror display, which relates to a later science unit. It was an interesting field trip! As part of their introduction to rollers and simple machines, students made pop can cars. They tested how far their cars could travel and also determined the speed of each. Later, they attached cardboard wheels to the cans, extending our understanding of rollers to wheels and axles. Students had fun competing against one another, even if a few cars required tune-ups here and there.
Over the winter season, students made Snow Globes. First, the Grade 4s learned how to paint gradients using watercolour, blending shades together. They then learned how to do the resist technique by putting watercolour over pastels. As a final effect, they added salt to the watercolour. It created an incredible snowy effect. The results really suited the holiday season!
