Here are some photos taken from the last day of school. Thank you Grade 4s for such a wonderful year. You were a truly wonderful class and I'll miss you lots! ♥ ♥ ♥

Before the end of the year, students learned about Pourquoi Tales, stories that explain a natural phenomenon. Students made their own Pourquoi Tales on Google Slides, explaining a natural phenomenon of their choice. Some of the stories included "Why Snakes Have No Legs" and "Why Butterflies Are Colourful". When students finished their stories, we printed them out and stapled the pages together so they could have their own physical copy. The Grade 4 class then shared their books with their reading buddies. The books showed such a range of creativity!
Although we could not completely finish our last math unit, students got a look into Data Analysis, gathering information and presenting in visual forms such as pictographs and bar graphs. In class, students performed exercises teaching them how to read information from pictographs before constructing their own.
For our Lights and Shadows unit, students covered many concepts to give a basic understanding of what light is and what a shadow is. Students first learned the parts of the eyes, to understand what vision is and how important light is to it. Some students were surprised to learn we would be unable to see anything without light! We then played around with lights and colours, learning about the concepts of colour addition and colour subtraction. There were some unexpected results!
Next, our class focused on the concept of reflection and how light travels. Students conducted experiments showing them the path light travels in and how that is affected by reflection through different objects and mirrors. Lastly, we had a beginning look into shadows, observing when shadows appear and how their size is affected by the distance of a source of light. It was a very revealing unit on something that is constantly around us. As our last art project, we learned the skills to make a simple stuffed toy. Students first learned 3 basic skills of sewing: how to start, make, and end a stitch. They then sketched out ideas for what their plushies could look like, inspired by the monsters from ClassDojo. Then the real fun began, gutting out fabric and sewing together all the parts. Unfortunately, some students weren't able to completely finish by the end of the year, but they certainly developed the skills to make a plushie on their own. The overall results were super cute. :)
At the end of Poetry Month, students explored concrete poetry, making a poem that connected to a concrete object or thing. To go along with their poetry, students connected their text to a relevant image using Google Drawing. Many students also played around with the layout of the text, and its colour and font. What resulted were very detailed and thoroughly constructed poems, taking into equal consideration the content and visuals. The poems were beautifully done!
For our math unit in Geometry, we covered many concepts from understanding the basic properties of 3D shapes to lines of symmetry. Compared to our other math classes, this unit was full of lessons that involved an element of visual understanding. Students did a great job drawing and cutting out different shapes, making symmetrical patterns, and constructing 3D shapes out of clay. To go along with our Science Unit on Lights and Shadows, students attended one of Disneyland's YES Programs. Here, students learned about the process of animation and how single images are put together to create a moving image. The trip helped us gain insight into the relationship between how our eyes and brain process what we see and the magic of optical illusions. Of course, we had a bit of general Disney fun too. It was a great trip!
For Multicultural Week, the Grade 4s looked at the country of Peru and tried to replicate designs inspired by Peruvian Metalwork. Grade 4s learned how to emboss metal, making markings on aluminium foil before colouring them with markers. The designs ended up looking quite bold yet intricate. Students also presented their masks and the inspiration behind them to the Grades 1-3 students. They did such a great job. Last month, students completed a writing assignment focused on comparing and contrasting two seemingly similar but ultimately different topics. Students generated topic ideas before further brainstorming and researching information to put into in Venn diagrams. When they found all the information they needed, they began drafting reports using vocabulary that show similarity and difference. Eventually, that information was put in a Google Slides presentation. It was a lot of work but the presentations turned out to be very informative!
