The Grade 4 and 3 classes went to the WWF Island House to learn about living sustainably. Our guide led students in discussion, thinking about their waste habits and what they could do to create less waste. To make the learning more interactive, we did scavenger hunts with iPads, documented different types of garbage on the beach, and filmed videos about the lessons learned for the day. It was a beautiful setting to learn about how to take better care of our earth.

As part of learning about waste, students learned that it does consist only of garbage but also water waste. Accordingly, the Grade 4s made water filters, finding what materials could turn muddy water clear. At the Ngau Tam Mei Waterworks, the students saw how water was cleaned on a much larger scale. There were still many similarities between their small filters and the large facility, which was an interesting sight to see! As part of our learning about Plant Growth and Changes, students went on a field trip to the Hong Kong Zoological and Botanical Gardens. There, we could look at a variety of plants and examine things such as leaf or stem types, and different kinds of seeds. As an added bonus, students viewed the animals and birds there, as well as played at a fun little playground. It was a great day all around! Last month, 4KE went to the Hong Kong Science Museum to further explore Simple Machines. There we saw a collection of clocks and more importantly gear systems. We were also able to see examples of pulleys. We otherwise explored the museum and even looked at the mirror display, which relates to a later science unit. It was an interesting field trip! The Grade 4s recently went on 2 field trips. The first was to Hong Kong Eco Park, where students learned about the landfills in Hong Kong and the recycling programs set in place to reduce the amount of waste sent to them. Students had to think about their impact on the environment and what steps they could take to reduce waste. In the same week, students went to Thunderbowl where they spent the time bowling. They had a great time playing and some students even hit strikes! To go along with our Science Unit on Lights and Shadows, students attended one of Disneyland's YES Programs. Here, students learned about the process of animation and how single images are put together to create a moving image. The trip helped us gain insight into the relationship between how our eyes and brain process what we see and the magic of optical illusions. Of course, we had a bit of general Disney fun too. It was a great trip!
To enhance our Science unit on Plant Growth and Changes, students when to the Hong Kong Zoological Park and Gardens. There we observed and drew a variety of plants, looking at their leaves, stems, flowers and more. As an added bonus, we even got to look at the monkeys, birds, and other animals that live there. During the afternoon, our trip got rained out but we were still able to enjoy spending time in the greenhouse. Overall, it was a fun day!
Here are some long overdue snapshots from our trip at SuperPark. It was truly a fun and active day! Last week we went on our field trip to Lei Yue Mun. Students had lots of fun playing activities such as billiards, tennis, badminton, and air hockey. It was quite an active and exciting day! Please check out just some of the fun in the pictures above!
4KE had a great time at Disneyland, going on rides and spending time with our classmates. Please take a look at some of the photos above! (Also, sorry again for the lack of photos for some students -- the class was split into 2 groups and I was only with one of them.)
