The Grade 4 and 3 classes went to the WWF Island House to learn about living sustainably. Our guide led students in discussion, thinking about their waste habits and what they could do to create less waste. To make the learning more interactive, we did scavenger hunts with iPads, documented different types of garbage on the beach, and filmed videos about the lessons learned for the day. It was a beautiful setting to learn about how to take better care of our earth.

In their most recent writing project, the Grade 4s learned how to write postcards. Students learned how postcards are set up and how to write short but interesting updates about their lives. They then chose family members and friends in Hong Kong and around the world to write to. These postcards will be sent out over the winter holiday and hopefully everyone will enjoy the sweet handwritten messages!
To finish off understanding the concepts of the Waste and Our World Unit, students made Google Slides presentations on the 5R's. They added Rethink and Refuse to the well-known 3R's to further address and think about the problem of waste and our environment. Students recorded definitions for the 5R's, including examples of each. After making their presentations, the Grade 4s then spread this message to their reading buddies in Grade 1, teaching them about how to use the 5R's to make less waste. The Grade 4s truly demonstrated how they were experts in finding ways to create less waste for the safety of our earth.
In a new challenge for students, they were tasked to debate the topic of fossil ownership in Alberta. Students were assigned to be in the Yes or No team, arguing if a person who found a fossil should be the one to decide what to do with it, or if it should be given to the government. The Grade 4s handled the challenge well, each team coming up with strong and varied points while debating respectfully. It was a great event to watch and a chance for students to think on their toes. Can't wait to see their growth for the next debate!
Over the past few weeks, the Grade 4s and Grade 1s have begun Reading Buddies. It has been a great chance for the Grade 4s to help their schoolmates develop their reading skills, while also realizing how far their own reading abilties have come. It's wonderful to see the Grade 4s being so responsible and motivated to help!
In our process of learning about the waste on earth, the Grade 4s learned that one of the biggest contributers is packaging. However, we also learned that packaging has many uses and should not be completely abandoned. As such, the Grade 4s were challenged to design packaging that considered all of its useful qualities while also being environmentally friendly and cost efficient. Groups made a wide range of designs, each original and unique in their own ways.
As part of learning about waste, students learned that it does consist only of garbage but also water waste. Accordingly, the Grade 4s made water filters, finding what materials could turn muddy water clear. At the Ngau Tam Mei Waterworks, the students saw how water was cleaned on a much larger scale. There were still many similarities between their small filters and the large facility, which was an interesting sight to see! |
