Over the past month, 4KE has been learning about fractions and decimals. The Grade 4s worked at understanding what fractions were and their relationship to decimals. It may have been our most confusing unit yet, but students eventually figured out how to divide those shapes and add together a grocery bill!

To learn about the fur trade in Canada, students played a game where they were either the First Nations or European Traders. Students negotiated with one another, trying to get the best deal furs or exchanging for the best tools possible. The trades were sometimes heated and full of excitement!
Grade 4s looked at the genre of realistic fiction, a fictional text that could believably happen in real life. The class looked at books where characters worked towards achieving their dream. The Grade 4s were then tasked with writing their own story about an event that would get them closer to achieving their dream career. Students brainstormed, wrote drafts, and put together books including real photographs of themselves and sometimes even their families. It resulted in a diverse collection of stories that the Grade 4s all had a chance to share with one another in the Learning Commons! In our previous Wheels and Levers Unit, students worked to modify cars in several ways. They attempted to improve the wheels and structures of handmade cars to travel further down a ramp. They also examined what they could use to make cars travel greater distances, such as balloons or wind power. The experiments gave great insight into how to power and design vehicles! In Health class, partners completed research on different environmental dangers. They researched different natural disasters including what they were, what dangers they posed, and how people could protect themselves. The Grade 4s then presented their information using Google Slides, providing their classmates useful tips for different situations!
