In Math, students have learned concepts by working together in their homework book, playing games with one another, and completing exercises for the teacher. It is a full process as students learn to apply what they've learned in a variety of ways!

Throughout September, Grade 4 has been learning about numbers up to 10000. We did this by looking at place value, and then estimating, adding, and subtraction. It was an extension of skills that many of the Grade 4s already had!
Grade 4s worked on understanding shapes and symmetry in their Geometry unit. This unit involved a lot of hands-on activities including making 3D shapes with clay and building symmetrical quilt designs. It was a much different experience from mostly working with numbers and calculations.
While we were learning about Measurement, students worked on an activity to help them visualize just how big a square meter is. They were tasked in groups to make a square meter out of paper. Then then used this giant square to measure the area of large places in the school. It was quite the upgrade from measuring objects in centimeters!
Over the past month, 4KE has been learning about fractions and decimals. The Grade 4s worked at understanding what fractions were and their relationship to decimals. It may have been our most confusing unit yet, but students eventually figured out how to divide those shapes and add together a grocery bill!
After learning and reviewing basic multiplication and division skills, the Grade 4s applied these skills to working with larger numbers. That meant they were learning to multiply and divide 2-digit numbers. Below are some photos showing the students working hard on solving difficult calculations!
Before the beginning of winter break, students finished off their review math unit on Multiplication and Division Facts. We practiced different multiplication strategies such as skip counting and left to right. We also reviewed how to use multiplication charts and practiced solving many calculations. Please take a look at some of the activities!
In Math, students been working on the Patterns unit. In this unit, students have been working with number patterns in tables and charts. As well, they have been working with equations and finding the unknown in an equation. The Grade 4s were quick to pick up on the concepts and soon showed how well they could read, write, and make their own number patterns!
As students continue learning about Whole Numbers, we have begun adding numbers to the thousands. Students have been working on different strategies for adding as well as estimation. Please take a look at a how the students have been working in class above!
To begin the year in math, we have started with the unit Whole Numbers. Students are looking at numbers up to 10 000. So far we have played games and done exercises, learning how to recognize numbers by place value, compare them (least vs. greatest), and sort them into Venn diagrams.
