4KE had a great time at Disneyland, going on rides and spending time with our classmates. Please take a look at some of the photos above! (Also, sorry again for the lack of photos for some students -- the class was split into 2 groups and I was only with one of them.)

Students have been continuing to learn about numbers up to the thousands. In class, we have played games to help practice adding and subtracting these large numbers. Some games are played online while others involve playing against a partner. For example, students play a game where they pick cards and make 3-4 digit numbers from them. They then make numbers, trying to see who can get the highest sum, or other variations such as a difference of 300. The unit is almost over and students have been working hard!
As we continue to learn about Waste and Our World, 4KE was given the task to design a prototype landfill for the city of Edmonton. Students were given the requirements of making a design that would carry as much garbage as possible, stop leachate from leaking into the ground, and cover the garbage as much as possible to prevent the smell from reaching the city. When the landfills were completed, we then tested them against extreme weather such as heavy rain (half a bottle of water) and a windstorm (a hair dryer). After all the tests, students learned that about the best design for an actual landfill, involving a large hole lined with layers of clay and plastic sheets. It was interesting to see all the different ideas students and a chance to put their learning to the test! We also looked at how dirty water is cleaned by creating water filters. Using an empty water bottle cut into 2 parts and a coffee filter, students filled the filter with different materials such as marbles and cotton. Students learned that the different materials would catch the dirt in the water, making it cleaner. Students then watched a video about the water treatment plant in Hong Kong, gaining an idea of what happens to all the sewage that comes from the city. Halloween was a jam-packed day for 4KE! We kicked the day off with our Halloween Parade, showing off our costumes in the Taikoo neighbourhood. In the afternoon, we then went to the Grade 5-8 classrooms and participated in activities that the Student Council organized. There was a Haunted House and even games where students dug for bugs! It was a sugar-filled day and thank you to everyone who gave treats to the whole class. (Also, apologies in advance for not having pictures of more students during the Halloween activities. The class was split into 2 groups and I could only take pictures of one.)
Just before (and a few on) Halloween, 4KE managed to finish their Halloween Slot Sculptures. First we sketched and coloured ideas for different Halloween themed characters in our sketchbook. Then we drew these ideas onto cardboard, before colouring them with markers and cutting them out. Students then cut out cardboard shapes and made notches in them to connect all the pieces together. We had some pretty unique and spooky results! As we continue to learn about Alberta, students put their mapping and research skills to the test. Students created a brochure on Google Documents, researching 2 destinations of their choice in Alberta and what tourists could do there. They also drew and labeled maps of Alberta with information about their 2 destinations. The Grade 4's were excited to see the brochures printed in full colour! The work they produced looked very professional and sleek. Please check out some of the process in the photos above!
