Dear Parents,
My name is Emily Chow and I am your child’s Grade 6 teacher this year. I am from Edmonton, Alberta and have completed my teaching education at the University of Alberta. During that time, I became involved with teaching English Language Learners, ranging from Elementary aged students to international students in university. Accordingly, my teaching interests involve assisting students of diverse cultural backgrounds who wish to receive an English education. Additionally, in that venture, I am an avid supporter of technology use in the classroom and hope to incorporate it as much as possible with your children throughout the year. Otherwise, in my spare time I enjoy creative activities such as drawing and graphic design. I am excited to be teaching in Hong Kong and I look forward to meeting you all throughout the year.
On a more informative note about technology, I wanted to provide some details on how I plan to use the websites Google Classroom and Class Dojo with your child. For both sites, your child will use their school assigned Google accounts to access them. I welcome parents to log into these sites with their child to get a better idea of what is going on in the classroom. More specifically, Google Classroom is a Google App where students will receive most of their information, such as information covered in class, website links, assignments, and exam dates. Students will learn how to use apps such as Google Drawing, Documents, and Slides in multiple subjects such as Language Arts, Science, and Math.
Secondly, Class Dojo is another website that will be used in the classroom. This website is used to encourage positive behaviours. When students demonstrate these behaviours, such as helping a classmate or participating in class discussion, they receive dojo points. Once students reach a specific amount of points, they will receive prizes such as class coupons or small gifts. Like Google Classroom, your child has an account on Class Dojo. Additionally, you as a parent can connect your email to their account to get a brief look into what behaviours your child is demonstrating in class. There is also a Class Story section where I will post regular updates for parents on upcoming dates such as school events and tests.
For both parent and student communication, this class Weebly has been set up. This website will include more formal content such as a calendar of important dates (school events etc.), announcements and reminders, information about homework and tests, and blog posts about daily classroom activities. I highly recommend checking this blog at the start and end of each week as it will help you updated on what your child is expected to do inside and outside of class.
Again, I look forward to teaching your children and meeting you all. If you have any questions or concerns about the technology or anything else in class, please do not hesitate contact me at [email protected]
Sincerely,
Emily Chow
