As students explored how waste is disposed of, they made models of landfills and water filters. They learned about the structure of landfills and how they should be built to prevent more destruction to the environment around them. The Grade 4s also tested different materials that could make water clearer. It was an important lesson on how we need to manage the wastes humans make.

In another lesson on digital art, the Grade 4s learned how to make animated gifs. They first practiced by making a simple crying face emoji. They were then tasked with making a more layered gif, inspired by video games. A variety of animations were developed, including shooting arrows, explosions, and creepy monsters. To see the gifs, please take a look at the virtual 4KE 2020-2021 Art Showcase: www.artsteps.com/embed/60501127f061ab3367ddf349/560/315 For our first time making a book, 4KE tackled the topic of Realistic Narratives. Students wrote about ways they worked towards a possible future dream of theirs. Students kept int mind that their stories had to be realistic -- something that could happen in real enough. Later on, those brave enough also read their stories to the class. We had lots of wonderful books printed out and ready to read!
While studying the First Nations people of Alberta, students gained a greater insight into their culture by designing teepees based on stories from the Blackfoot peoples. Students examined First Nation symbols while understanding the importance of nature and spirituality. As such, we ended up with some great designs and life lessons from those traditional stories.
As one of our art projects, students practiced working with paints and colour value. They then used their skills to paint a city landscape, with saturated colours in the foreground and less saturated colours in the background. The results showed an interesting variety of landscapes!
Here are photos from when students worked on constructing and understanding the mechanics behind pulleys and gears!
