To learn more about what humans do with waste, 4KE were introduced to landfills and waste water treatment plants. With landfills, students were split into groups of engineering teams. Teams were then given the task of making a new landfill for the city of Edmonton; they were in charge of drawing up a plan, making a budget for materials, and building their landfill models. We then tested their models, seeing how much garbage it could hold and whether or not their landfills could withstand a rainstorm. The models held anywhere from 6 - 23 pieces of garbage! Next, as we learned about where waste water goes, 4KE made models of water filters. Students were challenged to make dirty coffee-mud water cleaner: a clearer colour and little to no sediment. Students did a wonderful job and found out the best filter used sand and rocks!

After collecting the list of waste that students disposed of over the weekend, students had to sort images of those wastes into different categories, including what the waste was made of and whether or not the waste was biodegradable, non-biodegradable, or recyclable. There were a few surprises for students -- for example, even our used tissues are biodegradable!
