As part of our continued exploration of Simple Machines, students worked with rollers, and wheels and axles. They saw the effect potential energy has on kinetic energy, in terms of movement of a rubber band powered vehicle. The Grade 4s also tested axle positions on wheels. There were a lot of bumpy and sometimes failed rides, but there were fun experiments overall!

To get in the seasonal mood, the Grade 4s worked on making Snow Globes. Not only did they draw winter themed subjects, they learned how to paint gradients with watercolours, and further to combine that with the resist technique. As a result, we had a lot of striking drawings with a pretty wash of colour in the background! To finish off our understanding of Alberta's Natural Regions, students made a topographical map of Alberta. The Grade 4s were able to build the regions from clay, paying careful attention while sculpting and painting the landforms, wildlife, and vegetation of each region. The finished maps were really able to help students visualize a part of the world many of them have never been to!
For our new unit on Simple Machines, students were introduced to the roller. They figured out how to make rollers using something cylindrical in a sequence. They then used the rollers to move a heavy load. Grade 4s also learned how rollers could be used for a second function, flattening objects. The exploratory lessons helped 4KE's understanding of this useful simple machine!
On Halloween, the Grade 4s had a great time taking part in a grand costume parade, watching spooky movies, playing Halloween games, and completing creepy artwork! There was even a Halloween themed photobooth! Please check out some of the photos from the day. :)
In October, 4KE worked on making sculptures out of cardboard. We also tied in one of the biggest days of the month as our theme, Halloween. Students made a variety of cutouts from monsters to simple jack-o-lanterns. They then put the sculptures together using slots cut in connective pieces. We had some creepy crawly art come out of this project!
