This year, the Grade 4 students are reading to the Grade 1 students for reading buddies. The Grade 4 students took on the responsibility well, getting their buddies excited about reading and learning. I was really proud of how well they took care of the Grade 1 students. Hopefully some great friendships can develop as we will continue these sessions once a week!

In Grade 4 this year, math lessons involve students rotating through different math stations. After receiving a teacher lesson, students go through 4 stations in total. The stations are described below: Math Facts - Students practice worksheets that review basic math skills. At Your Desk - Students complete their assigned homework, including math workbook, textbook, and online assignments. Teacher's Choice - Students work with the teacher to complete an activity that reviews the new concepts learned. Hands On - In partners or small groups, students work with math manipulatives to complete an activity or game.
With 4 stations, our classes are quite busy but the Grade 4s have done well to manage everything! As our first unit in Social Studies, we have been reviewing our mapping skills. Students will use these skills in a future brochure project! For now, students put those skills to use by mapping the classroom. The key point was to use a legend and key to represent different areas in the classroom, and of course, to draw them in the proper place. Groups worked well together and came up with great maps!
In English Language Arts, students have been learning how to go through the Daily 5 stations. Students rotate through centers that focus on reading, writing, and grammar. One of these weekly routines is Making Words, where students are given a set of letter tiles and need to make different length words from them. The goal is for students to see different letter combinations, sounds, word families, and affixes in English. With all the letter tiles, there is one secret word! Students had a hard time finding it at first, but were definitely excited when they figured it out.
As an introduction to the Waste and Our World unit in Grade 4, students worked in small groups to answer the following questions in a Google Document:
It was the first time for many students to work on a shared Google Document with one another. They worked together to insert pictures and type text to share their ideas with the class! There were some accidental deletions and funny mistakes but soon using their laptops will be a breeze for them! |
