Dear Parents,
For those who could not attend, I would like to share some of the information given and answers from parent questions.
First, a website that is helpful in understanding the Alberta Program - without all the complicated language - is the Parent Handbook by Alberta Education. This website will tell you about what your child will be learning throughout the year. It can be found here:
https://www.learnalberta.ca/content/mychildslearning/grade4.html
Secondly, I addressed how students are typically graded. The following is the scale used:
Thirdly, a parent asked about what days of the week to expect the most homework for students. Fridays are typically the most concentrated for English Language Arts as there is Word Work, NoRedInk, and Spelling Tests. Mondays will be the most concentrated for Math, as students have the weekend to complete work (however Math is still assigned throughout the week). As for the other subjects, they for the most part have work completed in class. Unless students do not complete their work in class, they will not have it as homework.
Lastly, I wanted to address the concerns of parents who would like to improve their child's English (for both students who are fluent and those who are learning!). It is recommended that by Grade 4, students read at least 30 minutes per night. This can be done through Raz-Kids, which your children have on their computers. For those who are learning English, they should also go on Headsprout for between 30 to 60 minutes per night. Additionally, Ms. Misha has some additional information on her website, including webpages to learn English, and suitable cartoons to watch. The link to Ms. Misha's page is here: http://dsckeela.weebly.com/
This was a lot of information, so if you have any specific questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email or contact me through Class Dojo!

Secondly, I addressed how students are typically graded. The following is the scale used:
- Excellent 4 - Students exceed and/or achieve outcomes (assignment tasks) with little to no assistance.
- Proficient 3 - Students achieve outcomes with some assistance.
- Adequate 2 - Students achieve outcomes with thorough guidance from the teacher.
- Progressing Towards 1 - Students require teacher assistance to meet outcomes, and/or are not yet meeting grade level standards.
